Why Do We Do It? - Modesty Talk Monday
Why is modesty so stressed for women? Who sets the rules for what is modest and what is not? Is modesty something that pertains only to our culture, or is it relevant to everyone?
Why do we do it?
I believe that this question can be answered strait from the Bible. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 says, "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works."
When we hold serious positions and convictions in our life that affect the way that we live, we need to know the foundation of that conviction. If we are to claim that modesty is important and that girls and women of all ages must dress modestly, could we answer why if someone was to ask?
When our position is challenged, can we point women to the Word of God? This passage in 1 Timothy is the key passage that specifically addresses women's modesty, as other passages do as well.
So again, why do we do it?
Well, first of all, the God says to. He didn't beat around the bush, or suggest that we dress modestly, He commanded it. It says so right in this passage. (Yes, Paul addressed it to Timothy to give to the church, but who told Paul to write that?)
Secondly, we do it because we love God. If we love Him, we will obey what He commands. He wants us to be modest, and we show our love back to Him in being obedient, even with something as personal as the choices we make in what we wear. We give up our "right" in choosing how to express ourselves publicly by lovingly setting aside our selfish desires to be obedient to how He wants us to dress.
Is it a sacrifice? For many girls, yes. But that makes it all the more precious when we choose to obey Him in dressing modestly.
What are some of your reasons for dressing modestly? We would love to hear from you!
